What do we love it for?
A FocusTrack feature;
MasterShots to create clips at a click;
High resolution phot and videos;
High color transmission;
Easy to operate controls.
What were we disappointed with?
Not cheap.
The DJI Air 2S is our Editor’s Choice for the best follow me drone because it combines such features as FocusTrack (Spotlight 2.0, ActiveTrack 4.0, and Point of Interest 3.0), based on GPS, four-directional obstacle sensing, and 12km 1080p O3 image transmission system which ensure a reliable and safe follow for any object you wish. Its MasterShots feature takes shooting to the next level, just select the subject and the drone will film using 10 different maneuvers and then create a short video. With a 1-inch image sensor and 2.4μm pixel size, this drone can shoot 5.4K/30fps and 4K/60fps videos and 20 MP photos. The 10-bit Dlog-M color profile can capture one billion colors to more the image more realistic. Hyperlapse, wide-angle, 180°, and sphere are all the modes you can turn on with a single tap to create unbelievable shots.
The only reason you may wrinkle your nose at the DJI Air 2S is because of its 1000-dollar price tag. When compared to some of the other DJI arsenal models, this one really does stand out so if you can swing the price, consider buying it. We found that the camera quality is worth it.

What do we love it for?
Dynamic Track 2.0 and obstacle avoidance;
A return back home function;
A bottom binocular vision camera for soft landing;
High resolution video and photos.
What were we disappointed with?
Pricey.
The Autel Robotics EVO 2 Pro is our Premium Pick due to its Dynamic Track 2.0, 360° omnidirectional obstacle avoidance (12 computer vision sensors, 2 sonar sensors, and 2 LED landing lights) that ensure full visual recognition of the subject. It analyzes the location and speed of up to 64 targets simultaneously and predicts their trajectory, tracking them unceasingly. We especially liked the return home function that will return the drone home when the drone is out of reach or the battery is dead. We also loved that its bottom binocular vision camera creates density depth maps. It then calculates the flatness and angle of the depth map so that the drone can land safely. It has a 1-inch sensor Ultra-HD Sony camera that can film 5.5K video at 60 fps or 4K video at 120 fps and take photos with 5472 x 3648 resolution.
The Autel Robotics EVO 2 Pro really does have such a wide array of features, including taking awesome pictures and videos from a distance. It’s pricey so this might be the biggest turnoff when you look at this drone and think about buying it. Nevertheless, the crisp, clear quality of the video makes it obvious why it’s priced the way it is.

Why are we impressed?
A reasonable price;
A FocusTrack feature;
High resolution photos and videos;
Different modes.
What negatives must you be aware of?
Some bugs in an Android app.
The next model that caught our attention is the DJI Mavic Air 2 which also has the Best Value as it performs like a top-notch model but costs a bit less. Such modes as Spotlight 2.0, ActiveTrack 3.0, and POI 3.0 (FocusTrack) help you to create object-oriented shots. With a 1/2-inch CMOS sensor, you can take 48 MP photos, and the 3-axis gimbal shoot 4K/60fps videos. We especially enjoyed the results of the hyperlapse shot in 8K and post-processing was just a piece of cake as the pre-customized modes did their work. Capture whatever you want automatically with QuickShots (6 modes, including Dronie, Circle, Helix, Rocket, Boomerang, and Asteroid).
There is a reason we put two DJI Air models on this list. The DJI Air model 2 might not be as superior as the DJI Air 2S, but it’s still a great drone and for a cheaper price to boot! It’s easy to fly around so you will never find any trouble on that regard.

What are our favorite features?
No need for FAA registration as it’s lightweight;
Great camera for the drone size;
Impressive flight time, especially for a small drone.
What could be better?
Some users had issues with a mobile app.
The Autel Robotics EVO Nano+ is one of the smallest models with a Follow Me function, and it weighs only 249 grams, so it doesn’t require an FAA registration which is great for beginner pilots. It is also designed with three directions binocular system to sense obstacles and GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo + so it can focus on any object and follow it, creating a cinematic picture. We were also impressed by its 1/1.28CMOS sensor and 50MP lens, so it can produce 4K30fps and 1080p/60fps videos and 12MP and 50MP photos. It can also take quick shots and hyperlapse automatically. It can fly away as far as 10km and stay in the air for up to 28 minutes on a single charge, considering its size, it is quite impressive. And if the charge is low and the connection is lost, it will return home safely.
As with the other Autel drone we discussed, the Autel Robotics EVO Nano+ is also on the pricey side. It’s quiet and offers a great flight while you are piloting it. The aircraft itself is of great quality with a camera that will take great pictures. We know its pricey, but if you can afford it take the chance and buy it!

What are our favorite features?
Affordable;
User-friendly features;
Decent photo and video resolution.
What could be better?
Not the best transmission range;
Has a single battery.
Moving on to the next option, the HolyStone HS720G which is the best user-friendly follow me drone. It comes at a low price with beginner-friendly features like automatic take-off, headless mode, altitude hold, and optical flow positioning to practice and get enough experience for more advanced models. However, this model doesn’t lag behind its rivals in terms of Follow Me, Tap Fly, and Point of Interest features to capture incredible views. The Emergency Stop, Smart Return to Home, GPS module and One Key Return won’t let you lose the drone. We were like the 4K EIS camera, with which we were able to shoot 4K@30fps or 1080p@60fps videos and take 4K and 1080P photos, which is more than enough for such a price.
While the range is limited and it only has a single battery, this really is good for someone who hasn’t piloted a drone before and can’t afford to spend money. It may not be perfect, but you’ll be able to gain experience using a drone. What better one to test it on then the HolyStone HS720G.

What it is: Drones used for fun must feature a wide array of additional functionality – such as a 360° flip, Voice and Gesture control, RGB lights, and Protection Guards/Obstacle Detection.
The SYMA X500 4K Drone will be the best for taking selfies as it has a hand gesture feature to take photos without using a remote control. It’s also equipped with Headless Mode, Altitude Mode, and One Key to Take-off / Land features, so it’s also easy to use. We especially enjoyed its 56-minute flight time as it comes with 2 batteries. There’s no need for an FAA registry, as the drone weighs only 250g. Its Follow Me function along with Auto Return, Object Trace&Custom Path are GPS-based, so you don’t need to worry and enjoy the moments. It features a 4K UHD camera with 120°FOV AND 90°UP/DOWN will allow you to capture high-resolution videos and photos.
SYMA X500 is genuinely great for the price it’s being sold at. Like with the HolyStone brand, this is great for an amateur. You can get your hands wet and learn how to use a drone without worrying you wasted too much money. Even better, it comes with two batteries which is always a plus.
What it is: For general purpose. The drone will be used on different occasions - mainly for taking photos and video recording. However, the model can also be used for geographic mapping, hunting and fishing or just for fun.

What do we love it for?
Fully waterproof and buoyant;
Corrosion-resistant motor;
Wind-resistant.
What were we disappointed with?
Has a subpar flight time and transmission range;
Controls are a bit messy for beginners.
The SwellPro® Spry+ Waterproof Action Drone made it to our list as it is the best Waterproof Follow Me drone. It can land and take off from water as it is also buoyant, and its parts, incliding joysticks, built-in monitor, and all switches are protected against water. The motor also won’t be injured as it has a corrosion-resistant coating. Its 12 MP camera captures images in detail due to its Sony 1/2.3” CMOS sensor and can output videos in up to 4K/30fps or 2.7K/60fps resolution. It can fly around 17 minutes and as far as 800 meters and can speed up to 40 mph.
Just because the SwellPro Spry+ is last on the list don’t think that it isn’t worthy to be bought. It may not have the best control, range, or long flight time, but the fact that it isn’t easily affected by water or wind make it stand out from the others.
If you decide to buy a follow me drone, take into consideration such things as transmission range, flight time, speed and cameras are the first that comes in mind. When talking about follow me drones specifically, check all the possible follow me technologies and choose which one is the best for you. We’ve prepared the guide below so that you could make a decision when buying a follow me drone.
What is a Follow Me Drone?
A follow me drone is one that follows either you or a chosen subject. It automatically follows and tracks the subject. It enables easy piloting, photographing, and video making and creates more natural shots – especially if there’s a focused subject. It’s especially useful for a person who’s a controller, so they can set a mode, forget about controlling for a few minutes at least and act as they wish for the camera.
Follow Me Technology
Follow me drones function using two main systems for tracking. The first system was developed earlier and it is based on GPS (a.k.a. Global Positioning System) and the second uses more advanced recognition systems.
Follow me function can be implemented either through GPS or AI.
GPS Based Follow Me Drones
No one can be surprised by GPS-based gadgets and drones are no exception. Either a GPS-enabled smartphone or a controller with a GPS transmitter will let the drone track the transmitter and focus on the subject. It is a more reliable option as GPS is a precise and accurate technology. Any obstacle that comes in a way won’t be a problem for a GPS-based drone.
The main drawback is that the cameras on such drones are not good at focusing on the actual subject. However, you’ll almost never lose the subject from the shot as they keep the active tether between a drone and a transmitter pretty well.
Object Detection
One more system a follow me drone can be based on is object detection. It can be met on premium drone options. This system works using one or a number of factors like cameras, sensors, and tracking software. Drones based on this system track moving subjects with a high degree of accuracy and precision. They are extremely good at image quality and keeping the subject in focus in the center of the shot.
One of the drawbacks is obstacles. They can come in the drone’s way and it will lose sight of the subject it should follow.
Things to Look at When Buying a Follow Me Drone
Below you’ll find the main features and specifications to check before buying a follow me drone.
Transmission Range
You probably wondered how far some drones can fly and the transmission range will answer your question. The range depends on the strength of the controller signal and the type of transmitting technology. Obviously, the more expensive the model is, the longer range it has. A toy drone usually can go as far as 20 to 100 yards. Mid-level drones will have a range of 0.25 to 1.5 miles and high-end models – from 2.5 to 4.5 miles. For instance, the DJI Air 2S, which you can find in our list, can fly away as far as 7.5 miles.
However, always remember, according to FAA regulations, you cannot let the drone go away beyond your visual line of sight.
If the drone gets out of your sight and starts losing contact (first video, then controller), hit the return back home button or try to navigate it closer to you with controls.
Flight Time
Don’t forget to check the battery capacity of the drone, as it will determine its flight time, as well as the weight and size of the drone, weather conditions, and density altitude. The average flight time of a mid-level drone is around 20-25 minutes, high-end models can fly up to 30 minutes and more.
If it’s a gusty day and the drone puts a lot of effort to maintain its position, then it will fly a bit less time than in usual conditions. Also, if the drone experiences lots of hovering, turning around, and stopping or flying at higher speed, it can have a shorter flight time.
Max Speed
You probably also ask yourself how fast the drone should be. Well, it depends on your purpose. The max speed of a follow me drone plays a key role for some reasons. First, they should keep up with fast-moving objects, like cars or wild animals to capture perfect images. Secondly, larger areas are captured faster which saves your time. Finally, with higher top limits, you can choose whatever speed you like.
Beginner drones can fly at 12-20 mph. The average speed of a midlevel / trick drone is around 40-60 mph. Racing drones can reach top speeds of 100 mph.
Wind Resistance
Weather conditions are unpredictable, and you cannot foresee what is coming, so it’s better to be prepared for harsh ones, just in case. So that’s why we believe wind resistance is one of the main features you should look for in a drone.
High winds can spoil your images and videos, making them blurry and shaky or even worse – you can lose control of the drone, and it can crash into something. That’s why most drones are equipped with wind resistance features. Some drones have a wind-resistant design that lowers the wind influence. Others feature special sensors that can detect and analyze wind speed and direction, helping the drone to adjust to such conditions. Also, faster drones can easier withstand strong winds. If you’re looking for a drone that is specifically designed for such weather conditions, you can check out reviews of the best drones for windy conditions.
Camera
While some drones offer only an EIS, higher-end models also use a gimbal for camera stabilization
If your purpose is to capture high-quality content, then immediately check for the camera specifications. The majority of follow me drones have advanced camera hardware that includes high-resolution cameras, powerful sensors, and gimbals or EIS for stabilizing the footage.
With quality camera hardware, a drone can easily keep the subject in the frame and in focus while flying around smoothly and capturing pro-level videos even in beginners’ hands. In addition, most drones come with a controlling App to adjust camera settings quickly. Some advanced models also have shooting modes to choose from, so that you can capture astonishing views with one click.
Camera Stabilization
When it comes to drones, camera stabilization matters as whenever. However, the latest models come equipped with stabilization technology that keeps the camera still, even in windy or turbulent conditions. It results in smooth shots that are easier to edit afterward.
There are several stabilization technologies used in drones. One of the most common is EAS (a.k.a. Electronic Image Stabilization) which works with a sensor integrated into the camera, reducing excess jittering. It either zooms in to capture a more prominent picture or uses a sensor to resize the image to fit the available space.
A gimbal is another stabilization technique. It is a supportive device that stabilizes camera payloads by activating separate motors and compensating for unwanted movements. A three-axis payload is a more reliable option than a two-axis payload but it also adds up more weight due to the extra motor.
Weight
The weight of a drone is as important as other specifications. The drones that weigh more are stable in the air but it’s harder for them to fly, and they require more powerful motors. Conversely, lighter drones are easier to fly but in windy conditions, they are unstable and have shorter flight times. The drone’s weight also affects its portability.
It’s also noteworthy to remember that you don’t have to register drones at FAA that weigh below 250 grams or 0.55 pounds. This makes it a desired option for hobbyists and anyone who doesn’t want to hassle with paperwork. If you’re in search of such drones, then you can read through our analyses of the best mini drones and the best drones under 250 grams.
Registering a Drone with FAA
If you’re planning to use any flying device in the US, it should be registered with FAA (a.k.a. Federal Aviation Administration). As they can pose a threat to the environment if not taken responsibly. Drones can be used by criminals, so authorities need to have drone users listed. The registration ensures safe and responsible operation.
A drone that weighs more than 250 grams must be registered with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
For registration, they require the following information:
Address, either physical and mailing (if different from the physical one)
Email address
Cell phone number
Your drone’s make and model
Remote ID serial number provided by the manufacturer (if applicable)
Credit or debit card
The registration fee is $5 and the registration will be valid for three years. When you’re done with registration, you’ll receive a registration certificate. You also have to label your drone with the registration number from the certificate.
Before buying a follow me drone, first, ask yourself a few questions.
Do I have enough money? Follow me drones are considered to be advanced and, therefore, expensive models. If you want a quality drone that serves for a while, check your bank account and whether you can afford it.
What is your purpose? Follow me drones are suitable for photography and videography purposes. If you want to play with a drone, then consider buying a traditional model.
What is your skill level? As we mentioned, it is not a cheap type of drone, so if you’re in doubt about whether you will be able to handle it or not, then we advise you to check beginner-friendly options.
Some of the most common drone regulations include:
Stadiums and Sporting
Events Near Airports
Security Sensitive Airspace
Restrictions Restricted or Special Use Airspace
Washington, DC
Make sure you research the specific regulations applied in your area before buying a flying gadget. This way you’ll avoid fines and penalties due to flying in restricted drones.
The FAA strongly recommends that all drone pilots follow the safety guidelines written in the FAA’s “Know Before You Fly” campaign. These guidelines include basic safety instructions that every drone operator is supposed to know. There is also a comprehensive set of safety rules for drones called Part 107 prepared by the FAA. It is must-read and must-comply regulations.
We cannot give you a definite answer here as your learning path will depend on various factors starting from your experience level and finishing with experience. However, some tips include studying the basics of aviation and practicing in areas that are safe and obstacle-free.
Strictly follow all local laws and regulations. Always fly in safe and proven areas with few obstacles and avoid stadiums and airports. When piloting, always keep the drone in sight and under control.
You can take either online or offline courses that will teach drone piloting. It can be more helpful than reading some guides, courses also provide you with homework to practice received knowledge. Even though courses are not required to take, they can help you to prevent some accidents and breaking your drone.
When you’re done with the basics, you can move on to complex maneuvers and explore various areas. Just be patient, and you’ll obtain all the necessary skills for shooting Instagram-like pictures.
Our Verdict
We rounded up our top three picks, they include the DJI Air 2S, Autel Robotics Evo 2 Pro, and DJI Mavic Air 2.
The DJI Air 2S is our Editor’s Choice even among the best follow me drones. It features an incredible camera, FocusTrack mode, and four-directional obstacle sensing. Its only downside is its price. However, for such advanced features, there’s no other way but to pay.
Our next favorite model is the Autel Robotics Evo 2 Pro which is our Premium Pick. It is a professional drone with a quality camera that doesn’t restrict you from where you can or cannot fly.
Lastly, we chose the DJI Mavic Air 2 which offers the Best Value and still provides all the advanced technologies like FocusTrack and QuickShots modes for capturing whatever shots you like. We hope you were able to find your perfect option in the review of the best follow me drones.
The rule for operating unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) or drones under 55 pounds in the National Airspace System (NAS) is 14 CFR Part 107, referred to as the Small UAS Rule. However, if you want to fly a drone for purely recreational purposes, there is a limited statutory exception ("carve out") that provides a basic set of requirements.
Register your drone at FAA DroneZone either under part 107 or the Exception for Recreational Flyers. If you are not sure what kind of a drone flyer you are, check out our User Identification Tool or visit our Getting Started webpage to learn more.
