  • Why are we impressed?
    • We liked the one-touch control and landing. This includes the fact that it has a return to home function when using the headless mode. The carry case included in the controller is another convenient inclusion that makes transporting it easy. Lastly, the altitude hold function reduces the number of buttons you have to worry about operating when using the drone.
What negatives must you be aware of?
    • The construction of this mini drone isn’t the most durable, which is somewhat expected at this price range. As such, dropping the device could spell trouble. We also noticed it doesn’t handle wind very well. Consequently, it makes little sense to use it outdoors, which arguably could be more fun for the kids using it.

The design of the Holy Stone HS190, including the color scheme of the drone and the controller, makes it look like a fun little toy. It’s foldable and fits into a small compartment in the controller for easy packing and travel. Once it’s out of the controller, you only need to press a single button for both take-off and landing. However, it’s also possible for the drone to hover thanks to its altitude hold function that activates as soon as you release the throttle button. Other key features include variable speeds for different levels, LED navigation lights, 3D flipping and more.

This fun mini drone for under 50 is an excellent toy for kids. It has simple functionality and can even flip mid-air at the touch of a button.

  • Why are we impressed?
    • The drone doesn’t seem to be fazed by wind despite being as compact as it is. This might be due to the weight of the device and the incorporated 6-axis gyroscope stabilization. Also, the spread spectrum technology is a great addition as you don’t have to worry about other signals interfering with your ability to control the drone.
What negatives must you be aware of?
    • In our opinion, the charging time is less than optimal. Charging for about 100 minutes only to get a maximum of seven minutes of use time can be fairly frustrating for users. Also, while it does have a camera, the image quality is nothing to write about. As such, its uses are limited.

The Cheerwing Syma X5C-1, on the other hand, is one of the best drones under $50 with a camera. The 6-axis gyroscope, of course, is handy to ensure stability even against the wind, which again will ensure better video and photos. Nevertheless, it’s not something you could use for videography, and this is expected at this price range. The design incorporates blade protectors as well. This is in addition to flashing lights just under the propellers. Another thing to note is the spread spectrum technology. This feature uses less power while ensuring nothing interferes with the connection between the controller and the drone.

If you want a sub-$50 drone that handles wind quite easily, then the Cheerwing Syma X5C-1 is for you.

  • What are its best features?
    • In our opinion, the flight range is definitely something to write home about, especially for drones in the under $50 bracket. Also, this implies that it handles the outdoors and wind fairly well. Next, the flight modes are pretty impressive. One will introduce you to the drone's functions, while another is for experts who are a bit more comfortable with a drone controller.
    What could be improved?
    • Getting the calibration of the 6-axis flight control system right isn’t easy, which means your drone might crash into a few obstacles during your first few test flights. This problem is further exacerbated by the instructions in the manual since they’re not very clear. Consequently, it’s pretty easy to crash the device into obstacles during the initial stages of use, which can damage the propellers and other components.

Another option with a 6-axis gyroscope is the Hubsan X4 H107L. However, this one is slightly different from the Cheerwing Syma X5C-1 since you can adjust the sensitivity. Also, like some of the other drones listed, it incorporates LED lights into its construction. Notably, the device also comes with a blade protection guard, although it’s totally up to you to decide to include it in the assembly or not. The flight range is one of the more impressive aspects of the drone. You can fly it up to 100m away and back. Additionally, the charge and flight times are above average in this device, although not by much.

This drone is for users who want a device you can control over longer distances.

  • What stands out?
    • The maximum flight range is impressive for such a device. In our opinion, iPhone compatibility that allows you a real-time view of the video in addition to control over the device is also a top-tier feature. Finally, the drone comes with simple-to-use controls, e.g. the one-key take-off and landing and altitude hold.
What cons did we manage to find?
    • The charging time for the drone will likely test your patience from time to time. Also, while the drone’s camera is okay for this price range, the picture and video quality is still nothing impressive. Finally, it’s not the easiest to learn to control, which is why it’s advisable to practice use in a confined space until you get the hang of it.

About the camera quality, the Sanrock U61W’s 720P HD camera is better than most other drones in this budget range. However, the camera isn’t the machine’s only good quality. It comes with real-time WIFI FPV transmission, which allows you to transmit video to your iPhone, but only if you have the app. Notably, the app and your phone can also control the device, so you don’t have to use the included controller. The Sanrock U61W also ships with two batteries which offer a total runtime of 14 minutes. The maximum flight range is also one of the best on the list. However, the same isn’t true for the charging time.

This drone is great if you have an iPhone and prefer real-time transmission of video from the device.

  • Why is it special?
    • The quantities of the batteries included and their charge time are some of our favorite features in the Potensic A20. Also, you can change the drone’s speed depending on the area you’re navigating to better avoid obstacles. Another feature we liked is the intuitive controller with only a few buttons included.
    What are the flaws?
    • Unlike the Cheerwing Syma X5C-1, there doesn’t seem to be any technology preventing signal interference. Consequently, another device or drone controller can interfere with the function of the device. Also, while the batteries offer close to 18 minutes of runtime, changing them every 6 minutes could be a hassle.

One of the Potensic A20’s most positive qualities is the charging time. It ships with three batteries, all of which charge for between 25 to 30 minutes. Once full, they can power the drone for 6-minute flight times, so a total of 18 minutes when full. As for the flight range, it’s only 30 m. Also, the controller seems to be one of the more intuitive ones. That said, you can still use features such as one-key take-off and landing. The headless mode might also come in handy if you find controlling the device to be tricky.

The Potensic A20 is for users who don’t want to wait too long for their drone batteries to charge.

  • Why are we impressed?
    • The LED strips included are certainly a fun addition to the drone, and they also protect the propellers from damage. Next, you’re provided with two 7-minute batteries, hence a longer runtime than a few other drones listed. Also, despite the propeller guards, you get extra propellers just in case your first set breaks.
What negatives must you be aware of?
    • Like the editor’s choice, we noticed it blows away quite easily where there is wind making use outdoors impossible. Also, it’s not easy to operate, especially for younger kids. This increases the risk of accidents and damage to the device. Lastly, the drone isn’t very durable, and as such, it’s not likely to last.

Another mini drone for under 50 worth considering is the Hasakee Q9s. Like the Holy Stone HS190, it has altitude hold and headless mode. The similarities to our editor’s choice drone don’t stop there. The return mode, one-click take-off and landing and the variable speeds are included. It can also be more fun due to the inclusion of LED lights. Notably, these LED strips also serve as protection for your propellers, therefore, ensuring the drone can stay up even if it runs into obstacles. Lastly, the flying range of the device is fairly impressive.

The Hasakee Q9s is great if you want to brighten up your indoors with LED lights in the evening while your child plays with the device.

    Things to Consider

If you’re set on buying a drone for cheap, a 50 dollar budget is a good place to start. That said, there are countless drone offerings at this price range, and some are not very good. Consequently, you have to make your selection count, and a buying guide should tell you how to do it.

What to expect from a drone under 50 dollars

Drones come in a variety of prices. Some, like the ones listed above, will set you back under 50 dollars, while others will cost you millions. Each drone is unique, although the price range dictates a lot of the features they come with.

For instance, according to the Finabel European Army Interoperability Centre Trusted Source The Use Of Military Drones: The Impact On Land Forces And Legal Implications Military drones have come to revolutionise warfare. They are roving on land, streaking through the skies, and diving under the seas. finabel.org , drones are becoming a significant component of armies worldwide. Military drones could have features such as thermal cameras, weapons on board and cost millions of dollars. Civilian use drones will cost you thousands of dollars or lower.

That said, since you’re only paying $50 for the device, you shouldn’t expect much.

Typically, drones under $50 are for recreational purposes and are used mainly by children for fun. Also, they’re compact and don’t weigh much. This makes them suitable for indoor use.

Their lightweight nature is often a problem outdoors since they can get blown away by the wind. Nevertheless, a few drone options at the higher end of this budget limit can also handle the wind.

How to choose the best drone under $50

If you just want a toy for you or your kids to have fun with, here’s how to choose the best drone under $50.

    Size and weight

6 Best Drones Under $50 - Nice Choice for Children and Beginners! (Fall 2024)

On the whole, drones under $50 are pretty compact and lightweight

Picking the size and weight of a potential drone purchase, especially at this budget, is not so cut and dry. As we mentioned above, these devices are compact, and there’s a limit to how large you can go at this budget. However, the drone options still vary widely in terms of size and weight.

The Holy Stone HS190 for instance, is likely smaller than your hand and is lightweight to boot. If you were to travel with the drone, the small size and lightweight body would make it a cinch to pack and carry. However, it’s a problem for outdoor use since the drone will easily get blown away by the wind.

The Cheerwing Syma X5C-1, on the other hand, is much larger and will take up a lot of your luggage space in comparison. However, it handles itself pretty well outdoors. As such, the correct answer with regard to what size or weight you should buy will depend on what the drone is intended for.

    Flight time

While the Guinness World Record Trusted Source Longest duration Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) flight | Guinness World Records The Guinness World Records Official site with ultimate record-breaking facts & achievements. Do you want to set a world record? Are you Officially Amazing? www.guinnessworldrecords.com clocks the longest flight time of a UAV at more than 25 days, this duration is a lot longer than what you expect from $50 drones. Typically these devices fly for around 5-10 minutes on a single charge.

    Charging time

The charging time is another feature that can either impress or annoy you when using a $50 drone. The same as your phone or other rechargeable devices, you want a drone that charges fast as that leaves you with more time for use.

The Potensic A20 is very impressive in this regard since each battery charges for only 25-30 minutes.

    Transmission

Next, you check out the transmission, which is how the drone communicates with the controller. Most of these communication links use radio-frequency transmission. That said, the frequency used can have a significant impact on the operability of the drone.

In some cases, the transmission used can be open to outside interference, leading to loss of control. That’s why drone options like the Cheerwing Syma X5C-1 use spread spectrum technology to boost the transmission and prevent signal interference.

Also, if your under $50 drone comes with a camera, a different form of transmission is used to share video and photo data. In the case of the SANROCK U61W, the drone uses WIFI FPV transmission.

    Camera

As shown by some of the UAVs mentioned above, drones under $50 with a camera exist. However, they’re not many, and they tend to be on the higher side of the budget. Also worth noting is that the inclusion of a camera doesn’t mean it’s good quality, so you should choose wisely.

    Resolution

Good camera technology is expensive, which is why most $50 don’t have them. For those that do, the camera quality isn’t impressive. Nevertheless, if you’re going to go for a drone with a camera, you should try to get the best bang for your buck. The SANROCK U61W with an HD 720P video camera is one good example.

    Controls and navigation

6 Best Drones Under $50 - Nice Choice for Children and Beginners! (Fall 2024)

It’s hard to tell the drone’s front from the back when it is flying. The Headless Mode is a solution to this issue

For the first-time recreational drone user, such as with kids, controlling the drone isn’t often cut and dry. You need to learn how to get it up, move it forward, backward and even left to right.

Unfortunately, it’s almost always impossible to tell the front from the back when the drone is flying. Consequently, telling the left side apart from the right one is also a hassle. One workaround that manufacturer’s use that makes navigation and control a lot easier is the headless mode. It makes whichever side that’s facing away from the controller the front and is available in options like the Holy Stone HS190.

Other features that make navigation easier are the one-key landing and take-off, variable flight speeds and the altitude hold. The altitude hold keeps the device the same distance from the ground, so you only need to worry about lateral motions.

    Control distance

You can pick the control distance to match how you intend to use the drone. If you want an indoor drone, then the 100m range of the Hubsan X4 H107L will likely be overkill. Such a control distance is better suited to the outdoors as there you have more space.

    Other features

There are a couple of possible extra features you could get with your $50 drone purchase as well. One is the inclusion of LED lights which add a layer of fun to the toy. In the Hasakee Q9s drone design, these lights have even been used to form a protective cover for the propellers.

Another possible extra feature is foldable construction for easier carry.

    FAQ

Notably, many of these $50 drones are rated for use by older kids, e.g. 13 years or above. The specific age may change from model to model, so it’s better to look into that before selecting a particular drone.

Cheap drones that cost under $50 may be worth buying, although this is entirely dependent on your needs. If you want something that you or your children can fly around the house and sometimes outdoors for fun, they are worth buying.

However, if you’re buying them for videography, photography, or some other type of professional use, then drones in this price range are surely going to disappoint you. As you can see above, you don’t expect much in terms of camera resolution and even GPS features, and thus buying it for use in a professional capacity may be futile.

    Our Verdict

Of the six sub-$50 drones listed above, it’s hard not to take note of the Holy Stone HS190, Cheerwing Syma X5C-1, and Hubsan X4 H107L. The first is compact, folds and packs into its controller/case, and so long as you’re indoors, it’s one of the most intuitive to use.

As for the Cheerwing Syma, it handles the outdoors pretty well and even features technology to prevent signal interference between the controller and the device. Lastly, we have the Hubsan X4 H107L and what makes it one of the best drones under 50 in the market is the flight control system. Of course, there are other aspects as well, such as the 100m control distance.

If you’re going to pick out a drone model at this price range, everything you need to make the right choice is included above.
