Why are we impressed?
It's super responsive when you fly it, which means you can do really cool tricks and maneuvers with it. As long as you have enough room inside to flit it about (without any obstacles), you can really enjoy yourself flying the Parrot Swing drone.
What negatives must you be aware of?
Unfortunately, the battery only lasts a few minutes, even less than the eight minutes it is meant to last, which makes it a rather swift flying session, to say the least. It does have a second lithium polymer battery included and just a 30 minute charge time, though, so that does help limit the disappointment of this aspect of the product. We also felt that it is so light it just can't handle outdoor flying and is mainly suited to indoor flight use, which is a negative if you want to enjoy outdoor drone adventures.
The tiny, well-priced Parrot Swing is an incredibly agile plastic center shell/ polystyrene armed toy that goes a nippy 19MPH, makes loops, 180 degree turns, and barrel rolls. To capture its adventures, the drone with an 82-foot range also has a 60FPS camera installed. The device can fly as a quadcopter or an X-wing Fighter jet, which adds to its ‘cool’ appeal. 3-axis accelerometer, 3-axis gyroscope, and an ultrasound sensor underneath all add to the impressive technology contained within this light, compact drone.
The Parrot Swing Drone is comparable to the professional Parrot drones, which are far more expensive and elaborate in what they offer. While the Parrot Swing Drone is not as technologically advanced, it is made to be a fun and cute toy that works well, especially at this price. It’s not meant for people looking to fly a drone professionally and works well for its intended use.

What are its best features?
The Akklian Fixed-Wing Drone is easy to show off with an impressive design and great color scheme. You just have to show up with it, and it’ll likely catch a few interested eyes. It also drives and flies pretty easily and should work for kids 14 years and older. Another perk is the 1080p camera.
What could be improved?
Despite the great aesthetics, the Akklian Fixed-Wing Drone can be a bit limited, especially where flight times and distances are concerned. With only 10-12 minutes and a 100-meter maximum control distance, some of your drone use sessions may leave you unsatisfied.
What do you get when you combine a toy car and a drone? The Akklian Fixed-Wing Drone competes well with other fixed-wing drones on the list for the coolest design classification. However, great aesthetics is not all it has to offer. It can drive on land or fly in the air if you know how to use the two modes. While in the air, you get most of the functionality you get with other drones at this price range. Prime examples include the headless mode and the 360° flight.
Additionally, you can select flight speed for a better experience. If you’re flying at night, you’ll be glad the drone comes with LED lights for easier navigation. Also notable is that at 1080p, it has a fairly high-quality video camera for the price.
The Akklian Fixed-Wing Drone competes with other non-conventional drone designs like the one on the Parrot Swing Drone. However, some differences are apparent straight off the bat. Therefore, for anyone who just wants a normal drone with a cool design, the Parrot Swing Drone is an excellent choice with several perks as well. Conversely, if you want the functionality of switching between ground and air mobility, the Akklian model becomes the only choice.

What makes it special?
The SAFE technology makes the drone really easy to fly and the ideal beginners or children's flying toy. The Landing Assist Sensor contributes to this protective technology, helping landings to be even smoother and more satisfying.
What cons did we find?
Some aspects of the product are a little flimsy, and we felt that could be improved, especially as the product is likely to be used by beginners or children likely to have a few bumps and crashes whilst learning how to master the drone.
The HobbyZone RC Airplane Carbon Club is a cute drone designed to look exactly like the Carbon Cub from Cubcrafters (to scale). It has a landing assist sensor, is able to loop, roll and fly upside down, and will stay in flight for around 10 minutes per fully charged battery-run.
For new drone flyers or children, the SAFE technology that the product has is invaluable, helping to make it very easy to learn to fly and avoid crashing. This makes it ideal for beginners and young flyers, compared to more advanced and expensive drones. The novelty aspect of the product and its looks make it a really aesthetically pleasing toy with lots to offer the inexperienced drone owner.
What it is: For general purpose. The drone will be used on different occasions - mainly for taking photos and video recording. However, the model can also be used for geographic mapping, hunting and fishing or just for fun.

Why is it special?
We love that the product comes with anti-interference technology making it really easy to control and fly with other hobbyists. The product also comes ready-assembled, which means you can take it out and take it straight off - no waiting time for the fun ahead!
What are the flaws?
The plane does struggle to handle wind because it is so light, at just 17 ounces. The propellers can also be easily damaged, which is a little annoying, but replacements aren't too hard to pick up. Lastly, the flight time is really short, with one battery only providing around 8 minutes of flight in real-time. Each battery takes four hours to charge, so unless you invest in spare batteries, one outing is in exchange for one very short flight.
The VOLANTEXRC 4-CH is designed to look like a P51 Mustang warplane for the ultimate cool factor when flying and having fun with your new hobby. With a distance capability of 656 feet, 3-level flight control assists, 20 minutes of flight time, and an advanced gearbox system – the drone has everything you need to have a fantastic flight each and every time.
You can compare the plane to other beginner fixed-wing drones. In comparison, it is just as easy to set up and fly. The only difference is the design and the fact that this drone doesn’t offer as many safety features, which would be handy as it is designed for beginners who are more likely to crash it.

Why did it make our list?
The look of the drone is really cool, and you can't help but be excited to fly it and get it doing tricks in the air. Other plane types are cute, but they don't have the same look like a fighter jet, which just takes the edge on aesthetics.
What is not ideal about it?
Unfortunately, we felt that the drone did not fly easily, and it felt largely unstable and unpredictable in flight. For that reason, it's best suited to a more skilled fixed-wing flyer who can probably get the best out of what it has to offer.
Is this the coolest-looking fixed-wing drone on the market? Maybe! It’s not all style over substance, though. The stunt drone offers easy flying with a joystick remote control, 360-degree flip and stunt capability, 250 feet flight range, 10-15 minute flight time, gyro stabilization, and auto orientation, to name just a few features. If you want something to challenge your fixed-wing drone flying skills, this could well be the product for you.
You could compare the Sharper Image Thunderbolt to other beginner drones because it is categorized in that way. However, as a stunt drone, it isn’t designed to be as easy to control (or save from crashing) as comparable products, and so it would probably suit a more skilled fixed-wing drone flyer.

What do we love it for?
The battery offers a good average flight time of around 35 for a full charge in real-time conditions. This is a good 10 minutes or more on the average quadcopter battery. We also felt that the battery life combined with the fact the drone is so easy to fly makes it an excellent choice for those wanting to enjoy a leisurely drone ride, as opposed to doing speedy tricks or taking impressive aerial shots.
What were we disappointed with?
The FHD 1080p videos and 14MP photos are OK, but compared to drones in a similar price category they just don't compare. The FPV aspect is also generally not too well suited to this kind of drone. The resolution is quite low and makes more sense for drone racing. For safety and experience, it makes more sense to avoid using the FPV goggles with this drone, which then begs the question - why such a high price when you're almost paying more for this feature.
The Parrot Disco FPV looks a lot like an airplane in design, with fixed wings and a rear propeller – it’s a smart-looking drone. With a range of 1.2 miles, 50MPH speed, generous 45 minute flight time, and various functions such as; auto-takeoff, assisted piloting, and return home, it has a lot to offer wannabe drone pilots who want something a bit different from the average quadcopter.
Consumers will love that the product comes with a Skycontroller 2 remote control and a VR headset. This FPV feature enables you to enjoy your Parrot Disco’s adventures without even having to move. The product can be compared to DJI Phantom or Phantom 4 Pro drones because it sits in the same price category. Although the Parrot Disco is a lot of fun to fly, realistically, if you want to create great aerial shots – both video and photo – the DJI Phantoms are a smarter choice.
It isn’t always easy to know which fixed-wing drone to buy, even when there are so many fantastic products on offer, like those mentioned above in our reviews. It is hard to know what to look out for and what to avoid – especially if you’re a drone beginner.
The great news is that we have added a buying guide to our reviews so that you can feel comfortable picking out your fixed-wing drone. The more you know, the more informed you are when it comes to making that all-important purchase.
Let’s take a closer look at fixed-wing drones and how to pick the right product for you:
What Are Fixed-Wing Drones?
Like the Parrot Disco FPV, a fixed-wing drone relies on its long tilted wings to create a lifting effect while cruising.
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV’s) have really hit their stride over the last few years, now being enjoyed by all kinds of people for domestic and commercial use, rather than just by the military.
The majority of the market was actually taken by hobbyist RC airplanes a long time ago. This is because quadcopters simply weren’t readily available. Essentially, it was the military using incredibly advanced drones and then hobbyists flying control planes.
If you are looking for a fixed-wing drone, you’re undoubtedly excited to get on board with the fast-paced drone market, estimated to be worth

nearly $60 billion dollars in the next five years. Now, there’s a hugely diverse market full of quadcopters, fixed-wing drones, and hybrids of the two (The Parrot Swing & Flypad is a great example of a hybrid).
The differences between models vary hugely, but in design, a quadcopter essentially uses four rotors (there are also multi-rotors with more rotors), whereas a fixed-wing has two wings and propellers, much like an airplane. Both are controlled by a person using a controller.
You can also get professional fixed-wing drones that are larger than hobbyist types designed to gather useful aerial data. These drone types can be used in all kinds of industries such as; agricultural industries, aerial photography, and data collection. The benefits of using these kinds of drones include; using less power to fly, being able to fly for longer, and carrying heavier payloads.
How to Choose the Best Fixed-Wing Drone
Every fixed-wing drone has different features, and it can be hard to know what to look out for. In this buying guide, we have highlighted the most important features we feel you should consider when it comes to buying a fixed-wing drone:
Purpose of Use
A fixed-wing drone can be a perfect present for your child to have a new hobby.
Everybody has a different reason for wanting a drone. Some people want to enjoy photography with them, others want the joy of flying, others might want to use them for commercial uses. With fixed-wing drones like those we have listed, realistically, you’re unlikely to find any that can compete with similarly priced quadcopters when it comes to videography or photography. However, for hobbyist flying they are ideal.
The Volantex RC is perfect for group flying and hobby clubs because of its anti-interference technology. If you’re looking for a good beginner fixed-wing that does stunts, the HobbyZone RC is a good choice, especially for kids. If you want to dabble in general drone technology, the Parrot Swing & Flypad is a good choice as you get the best of both fixed-wing and quadcopter technology.
Flight Range
Fixed-wing drones in the hobby category are less about distance and more about maneuverability. The Parrot Swing & Flypad is an excellent example of that, being able to perform amazing stunts you’ll want to see at close range.
That being said, if you want to get out into nature – which studies tell us

reduces anger, stress, and fear – and fly your plane, you will want to see a decent flight range. On average, around 600 feet plus is a good flight range for a hobbyist fixed-wing, although some offer much less.
Take-off and Landing
Fixed-wing UAVs can carry various payloads and data-link equipment.
If you are a beginner in flying a fixed-wing drone, then the chances are that you will want take-off and landing help. Technology that aids these parts of the flight, like the SAFE technology that comes with the HobbyZone RC, is beneficial. Return home features as the Parrot Disco FPV has will also help this part of the process.
Sometimes, though, fixed-wing drones are designed to have a clumsy landing, and so, if that is the case, you either want to see they are incredibly durable, or parts like the propellers are cheap to replace.
Material and Design
The design of the fixed-wing depends very much on your taste. Whereas the Parrot Disco and Swing are both very high-tech in their appearance, the HobbyZone RC, Volantex RC, and Sharper Image Thunderbolt are all more traditional in how they look.
The design, though, as an airplane should not really affect how the product flies, with the aesthetics at least. Instead, weight and maneuverability are the key here, as those design aspects affect how well the product moves.
Batteries
The best fixed-wing drone kits contain batteries that last around ten minutes. Ten minutes is actually a good flight time for a fixed-wing hobby drone. Even those listed as lasting longer, in reality, will only last about 8-10 minutes in real-time. What you should look out for is quick charging time, as with the Parrot Swing, which only takes 30 minutes to recharge. That makes it easy to make one trip allow multiple flights if you have a battery charger with you.
Alternatively, looking for batteries that aren’t cheap to buy for your product is helpful as it means you can switch batteries easily on one trip, making it more worthwhile when it comes to effort.
Other Features
You’ll see photography, videography, and FPV features on some fixed-wing drones. Realistically, unless the drones are for commercial use and you’re willing to pay for that, these kinds of features are just novelty level in hobbyist fixed-wings. The best wing for FPV is probably the Parrot Disco, but if these are the tech features you really want, look at quadcopters to get them integrated into the technology at a great price. Otherwise, with hobby fixed-wing drones, the best focus should be on the categories we have mentioned above so that you can get the best drone in this category.
Both tend to be referred to interchangeably but can be considered different products. RC airplanes need your continuous input to fly them and have them do tricks. On the other hand, fixed-wing drones are machines that tend to be more sophisticated and are able to do stunts and maneuvers autonomously.
It depends on what you want the product for. Some fixed-wing drones in the higher-price categories are ideal for aerial mapping, defense, and carrying payloads. RC planes are also great for feeling like you are truly flying something. However, quadcopters offer a lot in the way of more advanced videography, photography, FPV, and automatic flight technology.
Fixed-wing drones are very much like cars in that they are almost decreasing in value from the moment you buy them. This is because new technology is always being developed, and your drone will not gain value as it ages. When it comes to fun, boosting your social media content, learning new skills, and potentially even gaining a new career, though, fixed-wing drones certainly are a great investment.
Our Verdict
Our top three products are favored because they offer a mix of fantastic features, fun, and great technology all for a competitive price. The editor’s choice – Parrot Swing & Flypad – is the perfect mix of fixed-wing and quadcopter technology, offering phenomenal maneuverability.
The Akklian Fixed-Wing Drone is one of our top picks, especially for those trying to decide whether to pick a toy car or drone with their budget. This model allows them to get both in one purchase, not to mention the cool design and camera capabilities.
